ULA ZUKOWSKA SPRING/SUMMER 2002
Ula
Zukowska has once again brought her brand of fashion technology to the
Toronto Fashion Week runway. The designer's architectural background
is definitely put to use in forging what are essentially breathable,
travel-friendly and futuristic living spaces. The state-of-the-art fabrics
Ula employs are waterproof and apparently protect against harmful radiation
and UV rays. The brilliant white Tyvek paper dresses with zip-up skirt
and matching jacket promise the same level of mobility for its wearer
as the crinkled top folding around the shoulders. In contrast, the charcoal-grey
Nioprin diver jacket with velcro attachments are utilitarian and rigid.
But Ula posits the notion that technology should be gentle to the body,
as seen in the holistically centred front pouch pocket, a recurring
element of the collection. Taking fashion into left field has become
second nature to Ula. "There is always a risk.
You have to be prepared for it," she says. With strong sales
on the west coast and an opening Asian market, it looks like this entrepreneur's
venture is paying off.
