![]() Thien Le delivered substance with a slew of seamless satin dresses, exhibiting a sense of colour that must be seen to be believed. Those throngs who braved the chilly winds for Thien Le's presentation were treated to a masterpiece of a collection that proves Le's vision is not only consistent but versatile. Pat McDonagh's unwavering taste for excellence made for another inspiring collection, while David Dixon, Harebell, Hoax Couture and Janet T.Planet continued to reinvent their own fashion terrain. Participating designers included Ol Grandeur, Eryn Reid, Damzels, Annie Thompson and Yolanda Ng. |

New voices were added to the melee. Paul
Hardy posits himself as an ambassador of the young blood that
is poised to stage a quiet revolution, and he had been making waves in
his native Calgary before attracting the attention that landed him in
Toronto Fashion Week. If his moody interpretations are any indication,
we can look forward to a meaningfully edgy landscape in the near future,
one where the only obstruction to new silhouettes are the limits of the
imagination. |

| Though more than a
few high-profile labels were conspicuously absent from the proceedings,
including Ula Zukowska, Crystal Siemens and Misura, the inclusion of a few
eclectic events revived the TFW schedule. An international contingent representing
Indian ready-to-wear and South African couture provided some healthy cultural
contrast.
The Matinee Fashion Foundation show was a lavish event that proved to be a bright point of the week. One can argue it read like the who's who of Canadian fashion: Wayne Clark, Yvonne and Douglas Mandel, Pat McDonagh, Nadya Toto, Amit Khurana, Ali Davoudi, Karen Pottle, Philippe Dubuc, Mariouche Gagné, and others. Each of the 25 grant recipients presented a striptease of three or four of their best pieces. Though Toronto Fashion Week has definitely cut out a bit of the hype, it now faces the challenge of replacing it with substance in the seasons ahead. Daniel
