FASHION DESIGNERS COLLECTIONS FOR SPRING-SUMMER 2003

Annie Di Lalla does what every fashion designer in the formative stages of their career should do- put together a concise, simple mission statement that creates an instant brand identity. Carla is right on the money, with its panoply of square-cut dresses in a variety of raw and organza silks as well as suede. "I wanted to re-introduce the dress in the life of the everyday woman," says DiLalla. "There used to be a classic way to dress and it was about feeling."

We're certainly feeling these styles. DiLalla takes the architectural stance that won her early accolades with the Smirnoff judges and redefines the dress a la Carla. Beautiful shades of soft peach, cream and black silks are given angular cuts, sometimes with a gothic motif. Just when a plunging neckline adds a touch of night-time sexiness, a half-flared midi skirt takes us into summer playfulness. Carla uses silk ribbon to delineate silhouette, as if the spectacular cuts didn't do that already.
