Vawk
spring/summer 2005
Perhaps it's too soon to tell if Sunny Fong's debut
collection hints at the future of an eminent couture designer, or a
stylized flash in the pan.
The self-taught designer's debut collection for spring
2005 does give us some clues to go by. Fong is the owner of a mean bias-cut,
and to top it off, he's not afraid to shelve it when a rougher cut is
called for. From Vegas costuming to Victorian debauchery, Vawk has its
thumb in many pies.
The men's line appears
to fall victim to a pitfall that plagues a spate of Canadian designers.
After seeing what fanciful tales that Fong is capable of spinning for
women, why is the men's line so boringly simple? If the conservative
male shopper wanted to stay conservative, they wouldn't be buying Vawk
in the first place, they'd be buying...nevermind. The only other disappointment
of the collection is that there was not enough of it to see if my theories
hold any water.
