FASHION DESIGNERS COLLECTIONS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2007

Marie Saint Pierre
spring/summer 2007

It’s unanimous—Marie Saint Pierre was one of the highlights of Montreal Fashion Week, wowing the crowd with killer shapes not to be found on anyone else’s runway.

Marie Saint Pierre does fitted sleeves, crinkling, and black like nobody’s business. Many blouses and dresses are the benefactors of what is an apparently effortless balancing act—decorative ribbon offsets the tightness of the silhouette yet is almost invisible in the dark folds.

On the flipside, off-white melts in chiffon folds and layers, structural bits that are unquestionably the designer’s own.

Junya Watanabe and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons trotted on the European runway what Marie Saint Pierre did here for spring/summer 2007: the re-dreamt tuxedo. Her deconstructionist interpretation of this timeless classic takes the form of an angular dress with a waterfall of frills cascading down the front.

Then there are the showpieces, some more wearable than others. Like any good mystery, whether it be a novel, a film or a play, every Marie Saint Pierre piece has a denouement.

A resolution, one might say, we didn’t expect.
