Zoran Dobric takes us on a dreamy trip to the Far East for his spring/summer 2007 collection, and brings Japanese esthetic and philosophy to Toronto’s L’Oréal Fashion Week.

“I visited Japan and that whole new world overwhelmed me,” explains Dobric. “Takeshi Kitano’s film Dolls (with costumes by Yamamoto) is still playing in my head.”

As they were playing on the runway. The traditional Japanese kimono is redone in contemporary couture using ancient techniques, such as silk hand-painting, wood-cut block printing and shibori pleating.

Red carpet stylist Linda Gaylard makes a prescient point. “Even though one might not want to be dressed head-to-toe in Zoran Dobric, there are so many separates that such craft went into.”

The separates do argue an irresistible case. The copper scoop-fronted dress is unique yet also trendy, for keeping up with the Canadian spring trend of maximum shine. The boucle knits are versatile enough to be worn with anything, light enough to be worn any time, and original enough to make people ask you where you got it.

Unfortunately, the secret’s already out.
